An American tourist, Tyrone Bennet, faces multiple charges after refusing to pay his cab fare and allegedly assaulting a security guard at Manila’s Ninoy Aquino International Airport (MNL). The incident occurred on September 14, 2023, when Bennet arrived at the airport without a departing ticket for that day.
Incident details
Upon refusing to pay for his cab ride to the airport, Bennet’s cab driver chased him into Terminal 3. Bennet subsequently ran through a security checkpoint at the airport entrance and, after airport security attempted to stop him, assaulted a security guard. A video of the incident shows Bennet threatening security personnel before eventually being surrounded and subdued.
Adding another layer to this already bizarre incident, it was later discovered that Bennet didn’t even possess a departing ticket for that particular day.
Criminal charges
According to local media reports, Bennet has been charged with violating multiple articles of the Philippine Revised Penal Code. These include Article 151 for resistance and disobedience to a person in authority, Article 155 for alarm and scandal, Article 148 for direct assault, and Article 263 for causing physical injuries.
Conclusion
The US Embassy in Manila has been informed of the incident involving Bennet, who is currently detained at the Police Intelligence and Investigation Division Office at the Airport Police Department headquarters. Given how Manila treats its criminals, I really wouldn’t want to be Bennet right now.
