Between October 9 and October 31, LATAM is running a promotion in which they’ll be giving four people a million miles each. I wanted to provide a brief overview of how it works and why it matters.
How to enter
The details of the promotion are in Portuguese, so I’ve done my best to summarize them below in English. To any Portuguese speakers out there, take a look at the rules and please let me know if I’ve gotten anything wrong. Here’s how to enter the sweepstakes:
1. If you’re not already a member, register for LATAM Pass
2. Register for the promotion here
3. Accumulate or redeem at least 4,000 LATAM Pass miles in one of the following ways:
- Purchasing LATAM miles directly
- Transferring miles or points from a LATAM partner to your LATAM Pass account
- Using the “Multiplica” option on the LATAM Pass website
- Redeeming LATAM miles
How to increase your odds
You’re allowed to enter this competition up to 30 times, substantially increasing your odds of winning.
To gain additional entries, you’ll need to do any one of the things mentioned above. For example, you could buy 12,000 LATAM miles in three batches of 4,000 in order to get three additional entries.
Importantly, if you’re subscribed to LATAM Pass’s marketing emails, you’ll get two entries instead of just one for any redemptions or accumulations. Technically, you could also get the same benefits by holding a LATAM co-branded credit card, the LATAM Pass Itaú Mastercard® Black, but this won’t apply to those outside of Brazil (and admittedly I haven’t done much to expand my Brazillian readership).
Earning LATAM miles is not easy
Unfortunately, it’s not particularly easy to transfer points to LATAM, so getting the maximum number of entries isn’t trivial. Since no major US credit cards transfer to LATAM, your only option will be either transferring Marriot Bonvoy points at a ratio of 3:1 or buying LATAM miles directly. Of these two options, I’d go with the former, since I typically don’t recommend buying points (unless you have a redemption in mind) and because Bonvoy points are pretty low value.
Other details
I’ve already mentioned some of these, but here are a few additional details you should know:
- All entries must be made between 10/09/2023 and 10/31/2023
- Each entrant is allowed up to 30 entries
- The winners will be announced on November 15
- You must be 18 years or older to enter
What you can do with LATAM miles
While they’re not easy to earn, LATAM miles are easy to spend. You can redeem them at generally reasonable rates for flights on the following airlines:
- Alaska Airlines
- Austrian Airlines
- Azul
- British Airways
- Cathay Pacific
- Delta Air Lines
- Finnair
- Iberia
- Japan Airlines
- Lufthansa
- Malaysia Airlines
- Qantas
- Qatar Airways
- Royal Jordanian
- S7 Airlines
- SriLankan Airlines
- Swiss Airlines
Conclusion
LATAM is offering four fortunate fliers a million miles each through a sweepstake running from October 9 to October 31. The entry pathway includes processes from accumulating or redeeming a minimum of 4,000 LATAM Pass miles, to multiple ways to increase one’s winning odds, such as by subscribing to marketing emails or engaging in multiple transactions. The challenge lies in the complexity of earning LATAM miles, particularly for US residents with restricted direct transfer options. That said, I think this is worth your time. LATAM miles are usable across a diverse array of airline partners and the sweepstakes have not been particularly well publicized.
